10 Best Indie Games of 2010

Compiling a list of the best indie games is a nearly impossible feat. Unlike the big-budget, high-octane epic thrill-ride of games from the big publishers, indie games tend to be a bit more subdued, more experimental and more ambitious. There are a ton released each month and since many only last a few minutes, it’s hard to keep track of them all, even the great ones. Toss in the fact they can appear on any one of the platforms and you have something like a million different games to chose from. Even still, here are a few of the best from the last year.

10. Super Crate Box

Windows, Mac

In Super Crate Box you collect crates to increase your score and try to dodge enemies. Each crate you grab nets you a different weapon, meaning you have to keep on your toes and learn an absurd amount of different weapons throughout the experience. It’s incredibly short, but since Dutch-based developer, Vlambeer is giving it out for free, it’s definitely well worth the price. Get it now.

9. Sleep is Death

Windows, Mac

While calling Sleep is Death a game might be a bit of a misnomer, it’s still one of the most interesting things to be released this year. It’s basically a Dungeons and Dragons style storytelling machine wrapped in a gamey skin, but what you decide to do with it is what makes it a game. Like some of the best games, this one takes a while to figure out how to play, but once you do, it’s an incredibly open experience. The game works like a co-op storytelling machine, the closest thing I can think to compare it to is improv theater. You’ll have to find a partner, then the two of you will work your way through a story of your creation. When both people mesh, it works remarkably well.
